The area does offer some great mountain biking opportunities.

There aren’t any places to rent a bike in Waimea so your best bet is to stop by Outfitters Kaua`i, 2827A Po`ipu Rd, Po`ipu, 808-742-9667, www.outfitterskauai.com, to rent a bike and a car rack, throw the bikes on it and go. They also offer bike maps to make it easier for you to find your way around.

Waimea Canyon offers several options for mountain biking. For those wanting a very serious road workout, try climbingWaimea Canyon Road (Route 550). You go up a hard and steep 3,000 feet for 12 miles, but the views will be amazing. It’s paved the whole way, but can be dangerous, since the road winds and curves and there’s not much of a shoulder.

For a fun and easy bike adventure, Outfitters Kaua`i, 808-742-9667, www.outfitterskauai.com, will take you on a tour downWaimea Canyon. It’s pretty easy. All you have to do is hop in their van. They’ll take you to the canyon, provide the bikes and helmets, give you some safety instruction and off you go. You’re heading 12 miles downhill. How easy can it get?

You meet at The Outfitters Kaua`i offices in Koloa and they’ll transport you to Waimea Canyon and bring you back to Po`ipu. The cost is $94 per person, $74 for kids between 12 and 14 years of age.
