Shopping

1

Shopping in the Po`ipu Resort area is an interesting experience. You have countless shops, farmer’s markets, the market at Spouting Horn and shopping in Koloa Town and Po`ipu Shopping Village. There are also fine shops at resorts such as the Hyatt.

Old Koloa Town takes you back 150 years as you stroll through the area. As the sugar industry waned and tourism picked up, these old plantation buildings were renovated and turned into a quaint shopping experience.
There are a number of restaurants and services here in the center. Tomcats Grille, Pizzetta and Lappert’s Ice Cream all consider Old Koloa Town home.

Christian Riso Fine Art & Framing, 808-742-2555, www.christianrisofineart.com, specializes in Hawaiian and tropical art. He represents artists such as Kim Starr and Kerry Oda.

At Island Soap and Candleworks, 808-742-1945, www.kauaisoap.com, you can see how they use local ingredients like macadamia nut and kukui nut oils to make soaps, lotions and other health and beauty products. My favorites are the Morning Mint and Hawaiian Sea soaps. Both smell great and are good for your skin. Open from 9 am-9 pm daily.

Kebanu Gallery, 808-742-2727, features fine pieces of pottery, sculpture, and hand-blown glass. The art is unique and attractive.

Crazy Shirts, 808-742-9000 , www.crazyshirts.com, has quality t-shirts that are dyed with clever designs. The shirts are dyed in red dirt, beer, chocolate, wine and coffee.

Po`ipu Shopping Village is basically a strip mall. There are fine dining options like Roy’s, Keoki’s Paradise or Puka Dogs. There is also much shopping to be done.

Na Hoku Po`ipu Shopping Village, 808-742-7025, is part of a chain that’s been around Hawaii since 1924. They create elegant tropical designs and have Tahitian pearls, diamonds, bracelets, or you can buy a Hawaiian slipper pendant.

Overboard Clothing, 808-742-1299, carries a nice selection of men’s and women’s swimwear, casual wear and accessories. They have brands such as Tommy Bahama, Tori Richard, Quicksilver and Kohala. Other Overboard stores are in Hanalei and Kapa`a.

Sand People, 808-742-2288 carries an eclectic mix of gifts. They also have casual clothing. Next door is Sand Kids, which is a children’s shop with a variety of clothing, beachwear, games, toys and footwear.

MakingWaves, 808-742-6899, features a large selection of swimwear and beach accessories for men, women, juniors and children. They carry the latest releases feom the top designers, such as Jantzen, Tommy Bahama and Roxy.

Kaleidescope Galleries of the Pacific (formerly Kahn Galleries), 808-822-3636, features the work of artists from Kaua`i and all over the globe. The gallery also has bronze sculptures and handcrafted koa pieces.

Sunthreads, 808-742-1115, is a small boutique with the latest in ready-to-wear ladies’ and juniors’ clothing, hats, and fashion jewelry. The hats are colorful and tasteful.

Honolua Surf Co., 808-742-9152, www.honoluasurf.com, is a surf apparel shop. You’ll find clothes and accessories.

There’s also Honolua Wahine, 808-742-7567, which is a surf apparel shop just for women.

The shops at the Grand Hyatt Resort & Spa are notable. I was surprised to see such high-quality stores in a hotel. The stores here are generally open from 9 am-9 pm daily. You can stop at Na Hoku for diamonds, Tahitian pearls (also check out their shop in Po`ipu Village Shopping Center). They carry Cartier, Carrera and Jose Hess as well.

Collectors Fine Art of Hawaii has original wall art, handblown glass, bronze sculptures, as well as acrylic and wooden pieces by local and international artists. They also represent the fine art division of Disney, Inc.

Lamont’s Gift Shop offers a wide range of clothing, accessories and jewelry, as well as a selection of gifts and sundries, snacks and cold drinks. The Sandal Tree has lots of fun and funky footwear for men and women. They carry stylish sandals and high heels, handbags and hats. They represent
designers such as Arch, Donald Piner, Mephisto and many others.

Reyn’s is the place to go for high-quality aloha shirts and aloha wear. For really nice Hawaiian quilts, check out the Hawaiian Quilt Collection, which carries bedspreads, wall quilts and ceramics.

Kohala Bay Collections is a great store if you want something sophisticated yet casual (perfect resort wear). They carry brands like Tommy Bahama, Tori Richard and Polo by Ralph Lauren.

Nukumoi Surf Shop, 808-742-8019, www.nukumoisurf.com, across from Brennecke’s Beach, is the surf shop of the South Shore. They have everything you need, with a sweet selection of long boards, short boards and body boards. They also carry beach chairs, rash guards and a large selection of surf apparel.

Over by Spouting Horn is one of the better places to shop. It’s an outdoor swap meet (flea market) with vendors selling jewelry, gifts, clothes and t-shirts. The souvenirs are of good quality and they tend to be much less expensive than most stores.

Groceries

If you need to pick up groceries, you’re in luck. There are quite a number of places to try. And there’s also a health food store in the area.

Brennecke’s Beach Deli, 2100 Hoone Road, Po`ipu Beach, 808-742-1582, www.brenneckes.com, has a small store that carries film, batteries, beach equipment and everything else you’d need for your day at the beach. They also serve shave ice for the kids and sandwiches to go.

Sueoka Store, Koloa Road, Koloa 808-742-1611, is an oldtime mom-and-pop grocery store that’s been in business since 1916. They carry a variety of Kaua`i-made products such as Kaua`i coffee. They also sell Kaua`i-grown produce and flowers.

Next door is Sueoka’s Snack Shop, which serves plate lunches and other local foods.

Koloa Fish Market, 808-742-6199, is in Old Koloa Town, right across from Koloa Post Office. Here you can pick up all kinds of fresh seafood: smoked fish, ahi poke, sashimi, seared ahi. You can also get party pupu platters. Koloa Fish Market has some of the best plate lunches around. They have specials daily.

Big Save, 808-742-1614, also on Koloa Road and it’s well stocked with anything you’d need for cooking a nice dinner.

Kukuiula Store, 808-742-1601, in Po`ipu Plaza (next to Outfitters Kaua`i), has all of the typical convenience store items plus anything and everything else that you might need for that picnic on the beach.

Koloa Natural Store, 808-742-8910, in Old Koloa Town, has a good selection of health food and organic items. This sure will save you time since you no longer have to head all the way up to Kapa`a to get health food.

Whaler’s General Store, 808-742-9431, has a large selection of groceries, snacks, liquor, cosmetics, sundries, suntan lotion, film, gifts, souvenirs and beach accessories. They are located in Po`ipu Shopping Village.

Finally, the farmers’ markets are all over the area throughout the week. Every day, there’s a market held by the West Kaua`i Agricultural Association in Po`ipu. You can find it at Po`ipu Road and Cane Haul Road. The other daily market is at Koloa Bypass Road, held by the Koloa Haupu Growers. Monday at Koloa Ball Park, you should be ready to go right at noon. That’s when the market starts and people start lining up beforehand to get in. It’s kind of like a mad Christmas dash. Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, off of Papalina Road, hosts a market Tuesday at 3:30.
