entertainment is Thursday from 8:30 pm to 11:30 pm and on Friday and Saturday
nights from 9:30 pm to 12:30 am.
Stevenson’s Library. This bar inside the Grand
Hyatt in Po`ipu was named after Robert Lewis Stevenson. They have the
best selection of cigars, Scotches and Ports. There’s also live
jazz every night and pool tables. It’s a very comfortable place
to be in. It’s cozy and wood adorns everything. The furniture is
comfortable. It decorated like an old study.
Seaview Terrace is in the Grand Hyatt Kaua`i Resort & Spa.
The terrace has a sweeping view of Shipwreck Beach and Keoneloa Bay. The
atmosphere is relaxed and open as the tradewinds come through. Seaview
Terrace is open for cocktails from 4 to 8 pm. There’s live entertainment
every evening. It’s a very pleasant place to stop for a drink on
your way to dinner.
Inside Keoki’s Paradise,
808-742-7535, is The Bamboo Grill. It’s open from 11 am to 11 pm
with Hawaiian music on Thursday and Friday nights and Sunday afternoon.
It seems to be a happening place pretty much every night. Po`ipu Tropical
Burgers also features live Hawaiian music from 6:30 to 8 pm on Sundays.
Beach House Restaurant,
808-742-1424, has a sophisticated bar with seats that have great views
of the beach and bay areas. Get here right when the bar opens at 5 pm
to grab one of the prime seats. This is a great place to watch the sunset.
The drink menu has everything. You can get a tropical frozen drink like
lava flow or a mai-tai, or you might want to opt for a beer. The Beach
House also carries an extensive wine list.
There’s even some late night action in Koloa! Tomkats
Grille, 808-742-8887, serves up late night drinks from 10 pm
to last call. It’s not a bad place to stop on your way home from
dinner.
Hula
Po`ipu
Shopping Village has Polynesian entertainment and dance at 5
pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Grand Hyatt Resort & Spa hosts free hula shows
every Tuesday and Saturday at 7 pm.
The Sheraton Kaua`i has a sunset torch lighting ceremony
with Hawaiian music and hula every evening from 5 to 6 pm.
Luaus
Drums
of Paradise Hyatt Luau, Grand Hyatt Resort & Spa,
808-240-6456, www.hyatt-kauai.com, takes place on Sunday and Thursday
at 5:30 pm. During the summer, luau is on Tuesday as well. Adults are
charged $65 per person; children six-12 are $33. The luau here was a bit
disappointing. The food is excellent, with your typical luau favorites
like Kalua pig and lomi lomi salmon. The revue features music from Tahiti,
New Zealand, Samoa and the rest of Polynesia. The show itself was OK,
but not noticeably better than other luaus.
Surf to Sunset Luau, Sheraton Kaua`i Resort, 2440 Hoonani
Road, Po`ipu Beach,
808-742-8205, 808-742-1661. Monday and Friday at 5:30 pm. Traditional
luau is $75 per person (children six-12 $37); Golden Circle Dinner is
$87 per person (children six-12 $43). This is a traditional luau, which
includes the lei greeting, a luau show and buffet. The Golden Circle Dinner
also offers premium seating for the show and tableside beverage service.
Upon arrival, you receive a shell lei greeting and have your picture taken
with Po`ipu Beach in the background. That makes a very pretty picture.
You can enjoy cocktails and mai tais and walk around the grounds to see
local artisans who teach lei making, lauhala and coconut weaving.
Then the feast begins! The luau features kalua pig, lomi salmon, pipikaula,
poke and poi, as well as Korean, Japanese and Chinese dishes. Before the
show, they put on a fun pareo (sarong) fashion show that teaches you a
few ways to tie your sarong. The show consists of traditional hula chants
and dance, which gives you the feeling that you’re experiencing
a real Hawaiian luau, not something manufactured and overproduced.
