Kauai South Shore - Poipu
Island of Kauai
Adventures on Water - Windsurfing / Scuba / Snuba
Windsurfing
If
you’re a beginner, windsurfing opportunities are a bit limited on
the South Shore. Experienced windsurfers will have a field day in the
area. Places like Shipwreck’s Beach and all throughout
the Mahaulepu area are great spots if you know what you’re
doing. If you’re a beginner and want to learn, your best bet is
to head up to Anini Beach on the North Shore and take
lessons from Windsurf Kaua`i,
808-828-6838. Anini Beach is much more forgiving for beginners.
Snuba
Snuba Tours of Kaua`i, Po`ipu,
808-823-8912, www.snubakauai.com.
Snuba? What’s that? This is a shallow diving system that combines
the best of the snorkeling and scuba worlds. It was created for people
who like snorkeling and want to take it a step further underwater. You’re
attached to a floating scuba tank through a 20-foot air line that allows
you to move around. You can also get closer to the deeper reefs and marine
life. You do need basic swimming skills to snuba and have to be at least
eight years old. They dive off of Lawa`i Beach in Po`ipu. During the 1½-hour
tour, you spend about 30 minutes in the water. The cost is $65 per person.
Scuba
If you’re going on a guided dive, one place they’ll probably
stop is at Sheraton Caverns. This is one amazing dive.
There are three lava tubes that connect to a wall. There’s a haven
of marine life here. Octopi, turtes, eels, schools of tropical fish. This
is paradise!
Kaua`i Down Under, Sheraton Kaua`i Resort,
808-742-9255, www.kauaidownunderscuba.com,
has a number of dives for beginners and experienced divers. For beginners,
they start you off in the pool for instruction and then send you into
the ocean for a one-tank dive. If you want to get certified, they can
help you with that as well. They offer guided dives, night dives and review
dives. For experienced divers, you can stop by the shop to rent gear.
The staff is pretty knowledgeable and will direct you to different dive
sites.
Mana
Divers, Ele`ele and Po`ipu,
877-348-3669, 808-335-0881, www.manadivers.com,
has a number of opportunities for diving, even if you’re a beginner.
They offer introductory dive courses all the way through PADI (Professional
Association of Diving Instructors) certification and specialty classes.
The classes are geared more for the experienced diver. They offer Scuba
Diver certification courses over two days, as well as a PADI Divemaster
course. If you’re staying at the Grand Hyatt Kaua`i in Po`ipu or
Kaua`i Marriott in Lihu`e, they offer introductory classes in the pool.
Dive Kaua`i Scuba Center, 1038 Kuhio Highway,
808-822-0452, www.divekauai.com,
has all of the gear you need. You can rent tanks, wetsuits, weight belts
and much more. They offer introductory shore dives for $105 (one-tank
dive) and $140 (two-tank dive). If you’re already certified, they
have shore dives and boat dives starting at $90. They also do night dives
and offer PADI certification courses. They’re certainly worth checking
out if you have any interest in diving during your stay.
Seasport
Divers, 2827 Po`ipu Road, Po`ipu,
808-832- 9222, 808-742-
9303, www.seasportdivers.com,
offers dives for anyone and everyone. If you’re a beginner, they
have a class where they start you off in a pool, then head out on a one-tank
shore dive or a two-tank boat trip. They offer shore dives at Koloa Landing.
Experienced divers should check out the morning dives to various points
along the South Shore. They also rent all the gear you need, including
weight belts, tanks, regulators and wet suits
Fathom Five Divers, 3450 Po`ipu Road,
808-742-6991, starts out with
introductory classes that include shore dives at either Koloa Landing
or
Tunnels on the North Shore. There are introductory boat dives as well.
If you’re already a certifies diver, there are a number of one-
and two-tank boat dives. Dives are in the morning, afternoon or at night.
During the summer, you can take the ultimate dive to Ni`ihau. Fathom Five
will take you out on a three-tank dive to Lehua and other sites off the
coast of Ni`ihau. They also have certifications for Padi Divemaster and
Rescue Diver.
If you plan to dive on your own, Po`ipu Beach, Lawa`i Beach
and Koloa Landing are good spots for shore dives. Po`ipu and
Lawa`i Beaches are better for beginners, while Koloa Landing is more appropriate
for experienced divers.
