Kauai South Shore - Poipu
Island of Kauai
Adventures on Water - Kayaking
In the winter months, the surf is too rough on the North Shore. This
means that kayakers will come down to the Po`ipu area for the calm waters
and great kayaking.
Kayak Kaua`i, Kuhio Highway, Wailua,
800-437-3507, 808-826-9844, does a tour of the South Shore. You launch
in Po`ipu and paddle west past Spouting Horn, Lawa`i Valley, the unusual
Nomilo Pond, and Wahiawa Cove to Port Allen. You paddle for over eight
miles. It’s not for the faint of heart. These tours are run from
October-April (weather permitting). This is the prime time of year to
see whales breaching the water as you paddle. Check with Kayak Kaua`i
in advance, as they need a minimum of four people for the tour. This all-day
excursion costs $145 per person.
Outfitters Kaua`i, 2827A Po`ipu Road, Po`ipu Plaza,
808-742-9667,
888-742-9887, also takes you on a journey along the South Shore from Po`ipu
to Port Allen. This tour is eight miles as well. You launch from Kukuiula
Harbor, pass Spouting Horn and land at Lawa`i Kai on the grounds of Allerton
Gardens. You then continue on to Port Allen. It’s run from mid-September
through mid-May for $135 per person.
During the summer, Outfitters Kaua`i has an all-day excursion to the
Na Pali coast. You’ll meet at their office in Po`ipu, where you
hop in a van to Haena. You launch there and paddle 15 grueling miles along
the beautiful Na Pali coast to Polihale State Park. A van will meet you
there and take you back to Po`ipu. You must be in excellent physical shape
for this paddle. This tour costs $185 per person.
If you want to rent a kayak, Outfitters Kaua`i can help you out with
that as well. They rent primarily for the Wailua or Huleia rivers at $40
per person per day.
