The South Shore of Kaua`i is a body boarder’s dream. The best time to body board here is in the summer, when the south swells create the juiciest waves. Of course, with that comes your warning about rip currents forming offshore. It’s very common to see lifeguards and fire trucks making rescues during this time of year. Check with lifeguards about the conditions before you go out.

The best place to go body boarding is Po`ipu Beach Park. The break at Brennecke’s on the eastern end of the beach park is forgiving and very easy.

There are plenty of places to rent body boards. You can start with Nukumoi Surf Company, 2100 Hoone Road, Po`ipu, 808-742-8019, which rents boards for $5 a day or $24 a week.

If you’re renting a condo, you might want to check to see if they have body boards for your use. Some hotels also have body boards available for their guests.
