Kauai South Shore - Poipu
Island of Kauai
Adventures on Land - Biking
The best area for biking here is Mahaulepu. It’s
two miles from the end of Po`ipu Road. Keep heading east on the dirt road.
You’ll get to a main intersection, where you turn right. The trail
passes sand dunes that were
formed over thousands of years, heading east past a heiau (temple). There
are also fossil remains (look, but don’t touch) and archeological
sites.
There are plenty of old dirt plantation roads in this area that are
worth exploring on a mountain bike. The trails are fast and flat, making
very easy and fun riding.
Regular road riding isn’t bad in the area either. You can ride the
10-mile Koloa Heritage Trail, which winds from Koloa
to the Po`ipu Resort area. There is a bit of traffic, especially heading
toward Spouting Horn. Just be aware and use common sense. Make sure you
have a lock with you because you’re going to want to go for a swim.
