Kauai North Shore - Hanalei
& Princeville
Island of Kauai
Shopping
There are plenty of opportunities for shopping on the North Shore, anchored
by the area’s four shopping centers – Ching Young
Village and Hanalei Center in Hanalei, Princeville
Shopping Center in Princeville and Kong Lung Center in
Kilauea. Each offers different stores for gifts and food and the buildings
are immersed in history as well.
Kong Lung Center
This has been the home of Kong Lung Company since 1902. The company
was originally established in 1881 by a Chinese immigrant to provide household
items for plantation workers. Today Kong Lung Company,
808-828-1822, anchors the Kong Lung Center and still offers higher-end
housewares, books, clothing and Asian antiques. The building has been
restored to its plantation-era design and is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places.
Other stores worth checking out at Kong Lung Center include Island
Soap and Candleworks,
808- 828-1955, www.kauaisoap.com.
You can see how they use local ingredients like macadamia nut and kukui
nut oils to make soaps, lotions and other health & beauty products.
Open from 9 am-9 pm daily.
Banana Patch Studio,
808-828-6522, www.bananapatchstudio.com,
has handpainted ceramic tiles and pottery, photography and t-shirts, among
many other items.
The Lotus Gallery,
808-828-9898, www.
jewelofthelotus.com, specializes in Asian and Hawaiian art and sculptures.
They’re open from 10 am-6 pm.
The Kong Lung Center is also home to the Kaua`i Arts & Cultural
Center,
808-828-0438, where you can catch movies and live entertainment.
Princeville Shopping Center
Traveling farther down Kuhio Highway is Princeville Shopping Center. Here,
you’ll find mostly vacation rental agencies and real estate offices.
There’s a Foodland for grocery shopping, Island Ace Hardware and
a few restaurants. Don’t forget to fill up at the Chevron Gas Station.
It’s the last gas station between Hanalei and Ha`ena. One really
fun store that I enjoyed was Magic Dragon Toy & Art Supply,
808-826-9144. They have lots of toys, games and other tchotchkes for the
kids.
Upon entering Hanalei, you’ll see the Hanalei Dolphin Fish
Market, which is home to a few galleries and shops. It also has
the Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant and Hanalei Dolphin Fish Market. Be sure
to stop by Kai Kane,
808-826- 5594, a surf shop with a sizable selection of surf apparel.
Ola’s,
808-826-6937, is a neat gallery that displays the works of over 100 artists
from Kaua`i and the mainland. The media range from glass to pottery, leather
to ceramics. Overboard Clothing,
808-826-8999, has a great selection of swimwear and aloha shirts, for
both men and women.
Black Pearl Hanalei,
800-588-3448, www.
theblackpearl.com. offers South Sea black pearl jewelry and designs.
Within the store is Kim McDonald Art Gallery, which display’s the
artist’s oil paintings inspired by the Hawaiian Islands.
The Mark Daniells Gallery,
808-826-6867 features watercolors and oil paintings. Mark currently works
in watercolor, oils, wood, etched glass and stained glass. Also in Hanalei
are two shopping centers directly across from one another: The
Ching Young Village, www.
chingyoungvillage.com, and Hanalei Center, both of which are in historic
buildings and have quite a number of shops and restaurants. Some of the
notable stores are in the Ching Young Village include Hanalei
Surf Backdoor,
808-826-1900, www.hanaleisurf.com,
which has surf apparel and aloha shirts, surfboards, kitesurfing and skating
equipment.
Pedal
and Paddle,
808-826-9069,
www.pedalnpaddle.com,
rents and sells everything you’ll need for your day at the beach,
from beach chairs to snorkel equipment They also rent camping gear and
bicycles, too.
Hot Rocket,
808- 826-7776, has modern and vintage aloha shirts along with tiki-themed
items. Blue Kaua`i Tattoos,
808-826-0114, is a good place to get that permanent reminder of your vacation.
Hanalei Video and
Music, 808-826-9633,
is a great place to pick up local music, beautiful koa `ukuleles and hula
implements. Evolve Love,
808-826-4755, is a gallery with a wide selection of art, some of which
has a very funky style. You can buy Hawaiian-style clothing for your kids
at Kokonut Kids,
808-826-0353.
Robin Savage Gifts & Gourmet,
808-826-7500, www.robinsavagegifts.com,
is a must for fine dining ware, and kitchen equipment. They also have
local art and fine linens from Tommy Bahama, as well as funky jewelry.
Don’t forget to pick up something sweet from the bakery. This is
the best place to find a unique wedding gift. Across the street from Ching
Young Center is Hanalei Center. Its stores are housed
in six restored historic buildings, including the old Hanalei School.
Worthwhile shops are Hanalei Surf Company,
808-826-9000, which has everything you’ll need for surfing. Sand
People, 808-826-1008
offers upscale resortwear, health & beauty items and gifts. For retro
and even borderline tacky memorabilia, you have to go to Yellowfish
Trading Company,
808-826-1227. They have a diverse collection of vintage prints, Hawaiian
antiques and aloha lamps. Kahn Galleries,
808-826-6677, offers high-end art and Tropical Tantrum,
808-826-6944, is a boutique with colorful and tasteful dresses, casual
attire and menswear.
Other stores that are more side-of-the-road places are Hanalei
Book Store, 4489 Aku Rd,
808-826-2568, which is a tiny, tiny bookstore with a large number of books.
If you’re looking for a book to take to the beach or just about
every Kaua`i-related book in print, this place is for you. You’ll
find maps and teen novels here as well.
Every Thursday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, The Christ Memorial Church,
2518 Kolo Road,
808-821-8814, holds its Craft Fair. Vendors bring handmade
jewelry and gifts. The proceeds help raise funds for the church.
For groceries, you have a wealth of options to choose from. In Princeville
Shopping Center, there’s Foodland, which has good quality and selection,
but it can be expensive. Big Save is located in Ching Young Village. For
fresh, quality fish and seafood, definitely go to Hanalei Dolphin
Fish Market in the back of Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant.
For healthy and organic foods, Hanalei Health & Natural Foods,
808-826-6990,
in Ching Young Village, and Papaya’s,
808-826-0089, www.papayasnaturalfoods.com,
at Hanalei Center, both have a good selection of organic goods and health
goods. Papaya’s tends to have a better selection and is a little
cheaper.
Finally, the Farmer’s Markets on the north shore
are not to be missed. On Thursdays at 4:30 pm, the Kilauea Neighborhood
Town Center hosts the farmer’s market sponsored by the County of
Kaua`i. On Saturdays, there are also farmer’s markets at 11:30 am
on Keneke Street in Kilauea and at 9:30 am in Hanalei at the Hanalei Neighborhood
Center & Ballpark.
