Nightlife & Entertainment

Even though the North Shore seems quiet and secluded, there’s still some nightlife happening here. Most of it consists of cocktails and live music. If you’re looking for a club or you want to do some late-night partying,
stay in Po`ipu.

Starting off in Kilauea, there’s the Kaua`i Arts and Cultural Center in the Kong Lung Center, 808-828-0438. You’ll be able to catch movies and small concerts here. It’s the only theater in the state with a BYOB policy.

In Princeville, there are a few places to go to. Happy Talk Lounge, 5380
Honoiki St, 808- 826-6522, at the Hanalei Bay Resort. Enjoy the open-air atmosphere while you have drink and pupus. It’s a bit more casual than The Living Room in the Princeville Hotel – an open-air bar that has pleasant music, great views, and friendly people. You get great views of Hanalei Bay. It has a Sunday Jazz Jam from 3 to 7 pm Sunday, and contemporary Hawaiian music in the same lounge Monday through Saturday from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Al Jarreau and Quincy Jones are among those who have stopped by the Sunday Jazz Jam, and the evening crowd has had its share of well-known Hawaiian jammers. On Saturday evening, Kenny Emerson, a fabulous guitar and steel guitar player, performs with Michelle Edwards.

Sushi Blues, 5-5190 Kuhio Highway, Ching Young Village, Hanalei, 808-826-9701, www.sushiand blues.com, has an eclectic mix of music every night starting at 8:30. It ranges from blues to reggae to Hawaiian.

Hanalei Gourmet is a fun place to have a beer and listen to local music. Normally, it’s a couple of guys playing guitars, but they sound good. They’ll play a mix of local favorites and classic tunes everyone knows. The only bad thing is that there’s no room to dance.

The Landing Pad, by Princeville Airport, has Fiesta Latino on Thursday nights. If you’re 21 or over, you can stop by at 8 for a salsa lesson for $10 and put what you’ve learned to work from 9-1:30. In the meantime, enjoy the mojitos. There’s live Latin percussion most Thursdays.

The Hanalei Family Community Center hosts traditional slack key guitar and `ukulele concerts on Fridays at 4 pm and Sundays at 3 pm. Look for the sign announcing the concerts on the left just past Ching Young Shopping Center. Admission is $10 per person. For more information, contact, 808-826- 1469 .

The only luau on the North Shore is the Paina O Hanalei Luau at Princeville Hotel. It’s held poolside with great views of Hanalei Bay on Monday and Thursday at 6 pm. $99 per person. Like everything else at the Princeville Hotel, the food is excellent. The show is OK. If you really want to experience a luau, your best bet is Smith’s Tropical Paradise is Wailua.
